Food waste is the biggest single source of waste from the U.S., states NPR and is also considered a major issue for major commercial waste company Greenline Environmental and as such we should seriously look into minimising our food waste.
In a bid to send food waste into the landfills, I will think twice about that which I toss, and utilize these solutions rather.
1. Save bits for neighborhood cows . In my kid’s lunches, food scraps out of the kids’ lunches were scraped to the”chicken bucket” and fed into the school’s cows. Chickens are far more picky compared to your mulch bin (they will even eat beef, which can be a no-no for your own compost). In case you have friends with hens, ask if they would prefer you to store your leftovers, but make sure you learn what they can and cannot eat. Probably you will be rewarded with the intermittent carton of eggs.
2. Take “Use By” dates with a grain of salt. Create that is somewhat wilted, or milk items which are a day or two beyond their expiration date, do not necessarily have to be chucked. The site Eat From Day gives some advice as to what”died” food could be eaten.
3. Purchase less food. Naturally, the best technique for decreasing your food waste would be to get food in the first location. Try to think of a couple foods that use these foods, especially ones in the refrigerator that will go bad. Shopping from a listing and attempting to not detract from it is going to also help you avoid the temptation of unnecessary purchases.
4. Regrow food produce. Were you aware that certain kinds of produce could be implanted and regrown? Just be certain that you use non-GMO or natural produce…
5. Get creative with leftovers. From the close of the week, my refrigerator is often full of containers and bowls full of leftover dishes I had every intention of eating. From today on, however, I will attempt to really use those leftovers in much more innovative ways, or be sure I’m home at lunchtime to eat the night’s dinner.
6. Compost. You have heard it before: Food scraps and create or grains, and even bread and eggshells, is going to be far more valuable for you in the event that you mulch them. Since we began composting nearly two decades back, we have seen a dramatic decline in the quantity of garbage bags which we fill. Additionally, the compost that we’ve produced within our tumbling composter was a fantastic soil amendment into our vegetable garden.
7. Grow scraps into leaves plants. Even if it’s to not consume, there are loads of fruit and vegetable scraps which may be cultivated into appealing plants. Avocados, potatoes, and pineapples are among the many crops which, although unlikely to supply you with a harvest-worthy return, will make fairly home plants (and most of us know how great it’s to have plants around the home!)
8. Disposal. Though it’s debatable whether the disposal is much far better than the garbage — because utilising the disposal employs energy, water, and naturally taxation that the waste treatment plant — that the scale certainly hints in favor of this disposal in case a wastewater treatment centre harvests methane as a source of renewable energy.
